A day on the island with Steve

We went to Catalina to spend Christine's birthday, and as a special treat our old friend Steve from Wilmington came to celebrate. We started out with morning pancakes and ended the day with a bbq on the beach! A warm thank you to Steve for making Christine's birthday extra special.

Avalon: the "other side" of Catalina

Our initial plan was to spend four nights in Avalon (the city that made Catalina Island famous); it's a quaint, Mediterranean style town whose only mode of transport is golf carts. While we enjoyed seeing the historic casino/theater and walking the hilly neighborhoods, this town is also a bit stuffy for our tastes. After one night on a mooring ball, we asked for a refund and have returned to the Isthmus.

Video: Breeze at Anchor

Here's a quick video clip of Breeze swaying in the wind at anchor. While at anchor, the boat is constantly in motion; but you get used to it.

Carlos and Marijke - Our Guardian Angels

Today this friendly cruising couple saved our bacon. We met Carlos and Marijke a little over a month ago at Marina del Rey. Since then we've stayed in touch with them and met them in common ports to share wine and conversation. This couple has MILES and YEARS under their keel; they will forget more about cruising than we'll ever know. And they came to our rescue today. Our engine was over-heating when we were preparing to leave; we got them out of bed at 7:00 and Carlos immediately came to our boat and spent the day trouble-shooting with us. He solved our over-heating problem and we are forever grateful for having this fun cruising couple in our lives!

Second Take at Santa Cruz

We wanted more island time, so we went back to Santa Cruz for a longer visit. For two nights we anchored in a rocky bay surrounded with eucalyptus trees and cliffs. The views were spectacular. While hiking we kept a sharp lookout for scorpions and snakes. But at night our focus was shooting stars and constellations.

Vineyards of Santa Barbara

Our last full day with Gretchen and Dave was spent touring the vineyards of Santa Barbara. We enjoyed these vineyards more than Napa and Sonoma due to their quaintness and seclusion; and the wines were better too! After tasting our fill of wine, we found a lonesome picnic table overlooking vineyards and mountains and enjoyed some crackers, cheese and conversation. Thanks again, Gretchen and Dave, for coming out! We really enjoyed your company!!

Santa Cruz Island with Gretchen and Dave

Roger's older sister and brother in law (Gretchen and Dave) came out for a visit. We took them to Santa Cruz Island to visit the marine sanctuary. While the way over and back were quite challenging, boating-wise, the bright Milky Way at night and secluded anchorage made it worth it.

Saturday Sailing Pictures

This was a great day on the water! A blue whale swam within 20 feet of us, there were a lot of seals and the wind was steady.

Video of Day Sail outside Santa Barbara

We went out for a sail yesterday. At first it was calm with speeds reaching 2 knots. On the way back to the harbor the wind picked up and here we are doing 6 knots (under sail alone).

Another lousy sunset.

This sunset preceded the first rain and thunderstorm in Santa Barbara since April.

Video not appropriate for children under 16!! A day at the Zoo.

We went to the world renowned Santa Barbara Zoo today. While the zoo was beautiful, we most enjoyed our informal lesson on the reproductive habits of the West African Spotted Horn Turtle. Tilt your head to watch the video.

Side Trip of San Francisco: Napa Valley and Sonoma

While in San Francisco, we took a day tour to Napa Valley and Sonoma. While this is not enough time to really experience the vineyards and surrounding beauty, it was enough time to tour three vineyards and taste 12 different wines.

San Francisco by Train

Because of a usually rough and long passage to San Francisco, we decided to take the train. It was a last-minute whirlwind tour; we stayed in three different hotels (due to limited availability) and saw most of the city by foot or bike. We saw all the usual tourist traps (Fisherman's Wharf: never again), but also found some great (small and quaint) dinner cafes. San Francisco proved to be a fun town and a good get-away from the boat (it was nice having our own bathroom with shower and square bed).

Touring Santa Barbara

Here is a view from the Santa Barbara County Courthouse.

Here we are in Downtown Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara was destroyed by an earthquake in the mid 20's and everything was rebuilt Mediterranean style.

Mountains of Santa Barbara

Here's a shot of the Santa Barbara mountain range with Stearn's Wharf in the forefront. This wharf was originally built in 1872 and took care of the majority of passenger and freight needs for Southern California for over a quarter of a century.

Boat Food

A couple of you have inquired how well we eat on the boat; while our galley is small and it's difficult to make very extravagant meals, Roger has been able to come up with a few dishes that satisfy the stomach (and the palate). Our storage area is small though, so we have four different dinner meals that we have in rotation. This is one of Christine's favorite and is grilled honey mustard salmon with Basmati rice and French green beans.

Santa Barbara Harbor Sunset

Although initially foggy, Santa Barbara is our favorite town so far in California. The mountains deliver a much needed familiar backdrop, but with palm trees. We plan on staying here for a few weeks while we explore the vineyards of Santa Barbara, the Channel Islands and San Francisco.

Tour of Channel Island Harbor

Here's a video tour of the Channel Island Harbor Marina. This is the quietest marina we have stayed at so far. Our nights are punctuated with barking seals and days with walks on the pristine beach.

MUST WATCH: DOLPHIN FOOTAGE!!

At first we weren't too excited about today's passage, but we had calm seas and saw dolphins, whales and seals! Today was one of the best passages yet!

Roger's home-made haircut

Today we gave Roger a new haircut. Christine had a little trouble with the back, but a freshly shorn head feels good. Next time we are going to tip the hairdresser extra.

Sparky and Janet

Here is Sparky and Janet from Pacific Mariners Yacht Club. Sparky has showed us the generosity and hospitality of a true water-man.

Cat Harbor Overlook

Here's Christine contemplating the expanses of the Open Ocean.

Night Lights

Here is a picture of Breeze dressed up for a night out on the town.

Video of Cat Harbor

This is a video of Cat Harbor; this harbor is a 15 minute walk from where we moored at Catalina Island. This is one of the most protected natural harbors in the pacific.

Out in the Ocean

Here we are, cavorting on the boat on our second passage to Catalina. Notice that we're not driving; our new crew member, Ollie, is driving the boat for us. We only took the wheel to set the mooring. (Ollie is the name of our new auto-pilot; and he steers better than we do).

Angel's Gate

This is Angel's Gate; the end of the breakwater for the Port of LA. We hope to not see this lighthouse again for the foreseeable future!

Sailor Steve - The One That Gets Out

Here's Steve. We followed Steve on our first trip to Catalina and is one of our first true friends.
